Appearance: Budgerigars can be green, yellow, blue, violet or gray and come in interesting varieties such as the English budgie, crested budgies and the "feather-duster."

Behavior with Humans:

When a pet budgerigar is first taken home, if approached, it freezes in the hope that you will overlook its presence. This is normal, and if the bird does not fly away from your hand then it will often at the beginning climb away or open and close the beak several times. These are normal behaviors, and biting is common but correctable. Sometimes if offered food, budgerigars will be somewhat docile.

Budgies have a variety of activities they pursue (see TheBudgiePlace for more detail) including social actions such as feeding or grooming one another (a sign of affection) loud greetings or calls made to others present, talking and sometimes "self-wooing" (see Self-Wooing Li'l Babi the Talking Bird as well as doing things at the same time because they are naturally flock animals. Non-social activities include biting to form a nest cavity in the wild or a toy in the cage. Females naturally required more opportunities to bite than males. It is not true that females cannot mimic; the birds will mimic your intonation or common sounds in the house, such as a telephone (if it rings enough).

See Parakeet Color and Mutations Guide for information on color and mutation variations.
